SOF IMO Class 4: syllabus, paper pattern and sample questions

The SOF International Mathematics Olympiad for Class 4 is a 60-minute paper of 35 questions for 40 marks in 4 sections. Every question has four options and one right answer. The last 5 questions are the Achievers Section, worth 2 marks each. Below: how the paper is set out, the 10 chapters it draws on, one sample question from each section with its answer, and how to practise it for free.

Paper pattern

IMO Class 4 is set out in 4 sections. Sprinto's mock tests and printed papers follow the same order, counts and marks.

Syllabus: the 10 chapters

Every question on the paper belongs to one of these chapters. On Sprinto's map each chapter is an island, and the Achievers Section is the same chapters asked harder — not a separate topic.

  1. 1.Number SenseSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Number Bay" on the map
  2. 2.Computation, Factors and MultiplesSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Adding Anchor" on the map
  3. 3.FractionsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Fraction Falls" on the map
  4. 4.Length, Weight, Capacity and ConversionsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Measure Cove" on the map
  5. 5.Time, Calendar and MoneySections 2, 3 and 4 · "Clock Harbour" on the map
  6. 6.Lines, Shapes, Solids and NetsSections 2, 3 and 4 · "Shape Shore" on the map
  7. 7.Perimeter, Area and SymmetrySections 2, 3 and 4 · "Border Bay" on the map

Sample questions with answers

One from each section, taken from Sprinto's own bank for IMO Class 4. In the app the numbers, names and figures are different every time; these are fixed so you can read them.

  1. Sample 1 · Section 1: Logical Reasoning · Figure Reasoning

Which figure does not belong with the other three?

    Answer: (B)

Three of them have 4 sides; the odd one has 6.

  2. Sample 2 · Section 2: Mathematical Reasoning · Computation, Factors and Multiples

Which of these is a factor of 42?

    Answer: (B) 7

    The factors of 42 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 21, 42.

  3. Sample 3 · Section 3: Everyday Mathematics · Length, Weight, Capacity and Conversions

The capacity of a small container is 500 mL and that of a big container is 1,200 mL. Anaya uses 6 small containers and 5 big containers of water to fill an empty tank. What is the capacity of the tank?

    Answer: (D) 9 L

    6 × 500 mL = 3,000 mL and 5 × 1,200 mL = 6,000 mL, so the tank holds 9 L.

  4. Sample 4 · Section 4: Achievers Section · Time, Calendar and Money · Achievers difficulty

The given clock is 40 minutes fast. What is the correct time?

    Clock showing 7:15121234567891011

    Answer: (A) 6:35

The clock shows 7:15. A clock that is 40 minutes fast is ahead of the real time, so the correct time is 6:35.

How to practise IMO Class 4 on Sprinto

  • One island per chapter. A hidden rating per chapter picks the next maths question at the difficulty that is just hard enough today.
  • Mistakes come back. Anything she gets wrong returns a few days later, then a week, then a month, until it stops being a mistake.
  • Mock tests in the real shape. 35 questions, 4 sections, 60 minutes, marked the moment she hands it in.
  • Papers you can print. A full IMO Class 4 paper with an OMR sheet, sat at the table with a pencil.
